The first week of Andy Burnham’s premiership has certainly caught the attention of the construction industry. While many of the Government’s long-term plans are still to be unveiled, the early signals point towards an agenda centred on housing delivery, regional investment, skills and devolved decision-making – all areas that have the potential to positively influence the UK masonry sector.
For an industry that has faced years of uncertainty, skills shortages and inconsistent workloads, there is cautious optimism that construction could once again become a national priority.
Housing Must Be Matched by Delivery
The Government has reaffirmed its ambition to increase housebuilding, including a renewed focus on affordable and council housing. If these ambitions are to become reality, they will require a strong, competent and well-resourced masonry workforce.
Bricklayers, masonry contractors, manufacturers and suppliers will all have a vital role to play. However, delivering more homes cannot simply be about increasing numbers; it must also be about building quality homes that stand the test of time.
Skills Cannot Be an Afterthought
One of the greatest challenges facing our industry remains the shortage of skilled people.
As demand increases, so too must investment in training, apprenticeships and continuing professional development. The Masonry Association has consistently championed competence across the supply chain, believing that quality construction starts with quality training.
Government ambitions for growth will only succeed if the industry has the workforce capable of delivering them safely, efficiently and to the highest standards.
Building Safety Must Remain at the Forefront
Alongside increasing housing delivery, it is essential that quality and compliance are never compromised.
The Building Safety Act has fundamentally changed expectations around competence and accountability. Every organisation involved in masonry has a responsibility to ensure its workforce is appropriately trained and that best practice is embedded throughout the construction process.
Growth should never come at the expense of quality.
Regional Growth Creates Opportunity
Perhaps one of the most encouraging aspects of the new Prime Minister’s early agenda is the emphasis on regional investment and devolving decision-making beyond Westminster.
Construction is inherently local. Strong regional economies create opportunities for local manufacturers, merchants, contractors and training providers, helping to develop sustainable supply chains and skilled employment across the country.
For the masonry sector, this could represent significant opportunities if investment is supported by long-term planning and industry collaboration.
The Masonry Association’s View
The Masonry Association welcomes any commitment that places construction, housing and skills at the centre of the UK’s economic strategy.
However, announcements alone will not solve the challenges facing the sector.
We believe success will depend on genuine collaboration between Government and industry, ensuring that policy is informed by those delivering projects on the ground every day.
The Association will continue to represent the interests of the entire masonry supply chain, promoting competence, supporting workforce development and helping shape a stronger, safer and more sustainable future for the industry.
The coming months will provide greater clarity on the Government’s direction, but if housing, skills and regional growth remain central to its agenda, there are genuine reasons for cautious optimism across the masonry sector.
