The Masonry Association Technical Committee has launched a new industry-wide survey to better understand the real-world challenges and best practices associated with the installation of compression-fit cavity barriers.
This initiative forms part of the Association’s ongoing work to bridge the gap between technical guidance and practical site application—a key theme identified by members across the masonry supply chain.
Cavity barriers play a critical role in the fire performance of masonry wall systems. While technical guidance around compression-fit solutions is well established, feedback from across the sector indicates that installation on site can present significant challenges.
Recent Technical Committee discussions have highlighted a number of recurring issues, including:
- Variability in cavity widths and tolerances
- Increasing cavity congestion from multiple components
- Difficulties installing into green mortar
- Time and sequencing pressures on site
- A growing shift towards zero-compression systems due to ease of installation
At the same time, there are concerns that installation decisions driven by convenience may have long-term performance implications, particularly in relation to settlement and movement over a building’s lifecycle.
To address this, the Association is seeking direct input from those working across the industry—including installers, contractors, manufacturers, inspectors, and consultants.
The goal of the survey is to:
- Identify the key pinch points encountered during installation
- Understand how cavity barriers are actually being installed on site
- Capture examples of good practice and effective techniques
- Highlight gaps in current guidance and training
The findings will be used to inform the development of a practical good practice guide for compression-fit cavity barrier installation, aimed at improving consistency, safety, and long-term performance.
